Q.  Isn't fencing an elitist sport?
A.   Far from it.  We have all sorts at our club - from College lecturers to lorry drivers.  Come along and you will find ordinary people - just like you!

Q.   Isn't it dangerous?
A.   No.  Fencing is a very safe sport.  The protective equipment is more than adequate to prevent injury and safety is taught very early on.

Q.   Is it expensive?
A.   Let's kill this one straight away.  Our club (as with most others) will loan you equipment until you are sure that you like the sport.  Then you can buy your own kit a bit at a time. All you need to get started is a pair of trainers, a t-shirt and a pair of jogging bottoms.

Q.   I think I'm too old / too young for this sort of thing.
A.    Nonsense!   The sport is suitable for anyone from 10 to 80.  All that's required is a minimal level of fitness and you can participate at whatever pace suits you.  (As with all sports, you should consult your GP if you have any concerns about any existing medical conditions).

Q.   OK, I'm interested, what do I do next?
A.    Adults should simply contact our Club Captain, John Hayes by e mailing him at captain@chelmsfordfencingclub.com and he will tell you more.
If you are a complete novice and want to have a go, contact our Beginners' Coach Trevor Richards e mail -  vicechair@chelmsfordfencingclub.com and he will tell you when the next beginners' course is starting.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate Juniors.  We recommend that those under the age of 16 contact one of our nearest other clubs, Brentwood School or Colchester.

Alternatively, you can just turn up on a Tuesday night and see what we get up to.  Either way, you will be assured of a warm welcome

GO ON - GIVE IT A TRY.  YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!!

CARU is Chelmsford's oldest and most respected Fencing Club.  We cater for adults - from 16 years upwards - and specialise in coaching absolute beginners as well as more established fencers.  We fence all 3 weapons - Foil, Epee & Sabre. We are linked to the University but are an 'open' club welcoming both students and non students equally.  Currently based in the Mildmay Sports Hall on the new ARU campus near Chelmsford Town Centre, we are situated within easy access of public transport and there is free parking available on club nights.  The hall also benefits from first class changing facilities with showers.  Club nights are each Tuesday evening from 8.00 until 10.00 with beginners fencing from 7.00 until 8.00  Beginners start with Foil and are catered for by way of qualified Club Leader Coaches who are trained and accredited by the British Fencing Association to teach to level 1 standard. Absolute beginners undertake a 10 week course which will equip them with the skills to progress further if required. More experienced fencers can avail themselves of advanced coaching from our Head Coach.
Please note that we are not currently able to accept under 16s at the Chelmsford site.  Youngsters are advised to contact either Colchester or Brentwood who both cater for these ages
Our charges are some of the most reasonable around and payment methods are flexible.  Fees include use of all facilities and coaching by qualified staff.   ARU students are offered all facilities totally free of charge.
Finally, we pride ourselves on being friendly and family orientated.  Whilst we are proud to have a successful record in competitions at all levels, the important thing is for us to enjoy ourselves - in fact, our social occasions are the stuff of legends!
