Format

________________________________________________________________________________

This competition format is unique to the UK, it has been inspired by the German Competition, Heinrich-Hahn-Gedächtnisturnier (Darmstadt Epee Marathon).

The competition will involve a whole day of fencing for all competitors. The estimated finish time is 5pm - 6pm. Please see the timetable for detailed information.

The competition is a mixed gender event open to all adult fencers as defined by the British Fencing Under 13 Rule. For more information please click here.

Initially there will be two rounds of pools which will be made up of 6 fencers each. These small pools should allow the competition to progress quickly and keep hanging around to a minimum. There is no elimination after either round of pools, all fencers proceed to the next stage of the competition. This is where the conventional competition format ends.

Instead of the conventional direct elimination table, all fencers are promoted into Mini Pool Unique's of approximately 18 fencers based on their results from the pools. Fencers seeded 1-18 are placed in Mini Pool Unique (MPU) A, seeds 19-36 are placed in MPU B and so on. All fencers in each Mini Pool Unique will fence each other to 5 hits using the same rules as a traditional pool fight.

Once in a Mini Pool Unique fencers will then be placed in groups of 3. These groups have no significance, they are only used to aid the administration and organisation of the competition. The fencers in each group will first fence the other 2 members of their own group. After this each group will fight each other group in their Mini Pool Unique until each fencer has fenced all the other fencers in their Mini Pool Unique.

Example 72 Fencers  -   27 fights per fencer

If each Mini Pool Unique has an ideal 18 fencers in then the results of Mini Pool Unique A will decide places 1-18, Mini pool Unique B places 19-36 and so on. The results will be calculated by the fencer with the most victories, then highest indicators, then hits scored. If two fencers are tied after these parameters then the result of the fight between the two fencers in question will decide the position.

As the results of each Mini Pool Unique fight are returned to the control room and process they will be displayed on a screen allowing each fencer to check their results and monitor their progress and position.

This competition is designed to give the maximum fencing experience, each fencer will fence the same number of fights irrespective of their final position. If each Mini Pool Unique has the ideal 18 fencers in then each competitor will fence a total of 27 fights. In addition to this each Mini Pool Unique fight should be highly competitive as the more skilled fencers will be placed in Mini Pool Unique A and the less experienced fencers placed in lower Mini Pool Unique's depending on their results in the pools. This should prevent easy fights for the more skilled fencers and whitewashes for the less skilled fencers.

The number of fencers in each initial round of pools, the number of Mini Pool Uniques and the numbers in each Mini Pool Unique are subject to change and each MPU may have differing numbers of fencers. The exact numbers and format can not be confirmed until after check in has closed. Therefore the examples given above are for an ideal number and should be taken as a guide The exact number of fights can not be guaranteed. This competition format CAN guarantee much more fencing than the traditional open.
